WATFORD THROUGH THE AGES

A town with a rich history that stretches back to the 12th century. Watford's story began when the Abbot of St. Albans, as lord of the manor, established a market along a well-traveled route, choosing a location that became the heart of the town.

St. Mary’s Church, built beside the market, remains a key landmark and the parish church of Watford today. While the town itself started in the 12th century, it’s believed that people had been passing through the area long before.

The name "Watford" likely comes from the Anglo-Saxon word for a ford, reflecting its importance as a crossing point. Visitors can discover traces of these early times at Watford Museum.

Although much of medieval Watford has faded over time, St. Mary’s Church and a few historic buildings like the Bedford Almshouses from 1580 still stand, offering glimpses into the town's past.

THE JOURNEY TO MODERN DAY WATFORD

Watford began to change rapidly in the 19th century with the arrival of the Grand Union Canal and the railway in 1837, which connected the town to major cities like London. These developments brought new industries and led to a population boom, with many of the town's streets laid out during this period.

As Watford grew, so did its local government, evolving from a Board of Health to an Urban District Council, and finally to a Borough Council in 1922 to meet the needs of the expanding community. The town’s economy also shifted, with traditional farming giving way to brewing, silk preparation, printing, and eventually, engineering and manufacturing.

Today, Watford is a thriving town that blends its rich history with modern vibrancy. Whether you're here for work, leisure, or to explore its historical roots, Watford offers a welcoming atmosphere and easy access thanks to major transport links like the M1 and M25.
